On Jan 13, 2012, the luxury mega-ship Costa Concordia struck a reef off Italy's Giglio island after Captain Francesco Schettino attempted a reckless sail-by salute. The impact tore a fatal gash in the hull. Instead of ordering an immediate evacuation, Schettino fatally delayed the alarm and abandoned his sinking ship.
